Human Research Ethics - Social Science |
 |
|
If you are not sure if your research
needs ethics approval, which level of approval it needs,
or which committee you should apply to, please use our
online scope checker.
The Tasmanian Social Sciences HREC (SS HREC) has responsibility
for the review of all the research involving human participation
that does not fall within the scope of the Tasmanian
Health and Medical HREC.
This means the SS HREC reviews mainly research involving
human participation that is conducted under the auspices
of the University of Tasmania (eg for a University degree,
a grant administered by the University, or for a planned
publication or report where the author(s) will cite
their role within the University).
The SS HREC also reviews commercial research and consultancy
work if the researcher(s) will be using University of
Tasmania equipment or resources, or will be covered
by University of Tasmania indemnity/insurance for the
work. Other research may be reviewed by request.
The Chair of the Social Sciences HREC is Dr Frances
Martin.

PROCESSES FOR APPLICATIONS TO THE SOCIAL SCIENCES HREC
- Use the scope checker to determine if
your application is minimal risk or if a full application is needed.
- Complete the appropriate application form – this must
then be submitted electronically to the Ethics Officer, Marilyn
Knott – Marilyn.Knott@utas.edu.au
you will need to also send electronically all the relevant supporting
documentation for this application.
The hard copy of the application and supporting documents must
be signed by the relevant people and posted to Marilyn Knott,
Private Bag 1, Hobart.
- Once received and processed on the Ethics database, you will
receive a unique ethics reference number. Please ensure you quote
this number when contacting the office in relation to your project.
- When your project has been assessed by either the HREC or the
Chair, you will be contacted by email. If you need to make changes
to your documentation, you will be advised of this.
- When all revised documents have been received and approved,
you will receive an email notification of approval and may then
commence your research. A letter of formal ethics approval will
follow – this must be kept for your records. Ethics approval
is valid for four years, subject to annual reporting commitments.
- Every 12 months, to date of your original ethics approval, you
must submit a completed ethics annual report form and return it
to the Ethics Officer. Some projects are completed within the
first 12 months and in that case, a completed Ethics Final report
form must be submitted to close ethics cover on the project file.
If your project extends beyond that date and still needs ethics
cover, submitting a Progress report form will allow ethics cover
for a further 12 months (to date of original approval). After
the third year of submitting a progress report form to extend
ethics cover, the ethics database will automatically call for
an Ethics Final report form. If you project is continuing after
that third year, an Ethics Extension form must be submitted
to allow a further four years of ethics cover on the project.
Remember that ethics cover on a research project can be closed
at any time – as long as a completed Ethics Final report
form is submitted and then approved by the HREC.
- On average, a full application to the Social Sciences HREC takes
42 days from submission to approval, though some projects may
take longer than this. A minimal risk project should take between
7 and 10 days from submission to approval, though some projects
may take longer.
