The Board of Graduate Research |
| Brief overview |
The Board of Graduate Research is responsible for the programs of study and research leading to a research higher degree. The functions of the Board, which are defined in the Ordinance, are to advise the Academic Senate on matters relating to graduate research, including the Rules and Procedures, and to manage graduate research candidature. For example, the Board approves admission to candidature, appoints supervisors, monitors the progress of all candidates, appoints examiners, and determines whether or not candidates should be awarded degrees.
The Board includes appointed members, those elected by academic staff (who are registered with the Board) and one member elected by graduate research candidates. The Dean of Graduate Research chairs meetings of the Board and represents it on other University bodies including the Academic Senate and the Research College.
The Board is required by ordinance to ‘monitor the quality of supervision of candidates’. As part of this process, the Dean regularly visits schools to talk with candidates and supervisors. Candidates are encouraged to take an active part in these sessions or to request a meeting with the Dean.
